London’s business district of West End has topped the latest global list of world’s most expensive letting space, which it had lost to Tokyo Inner Central District.

A recent survey commissioned by CB Richard Ellis that covered all the major cities and their office rents found that the average rent in London’s West End district is $186 per sq ft, followed by Tokyo at about $173 per sq ft. The Outer Circle of Tokyo comes in third, at $138 per sq ft.

The Central Business District of Hong Kong at $138 and Moscow at $132 per sq ft completes the top five in the list.

Raymond Torto, Global Chief Economist at Richard Ellis, states that commercial real estate values are beginning to stabilize, which is a good sign. However, the property values underlying the rents are still weak and haven’t really seen any growth. However, the offices to let London market is in its recovery stage after the prolonged recession.

The report also states that the cost of real estate across the globe has dropped a cumulative eight per cent over last year’s figures, across the total 179 markets surveyed. Of these, fifty showed office rental drops of over 10 per cent and 131 indicated a decline in rental values over last year.

The highest drops in rental values were seen in the financial hubs of New York’s Midtown district and in Singapore. Among the other destinations hit badly were upcoming cities like Abu Dhabi and Kiev in Ukraine.

Epiphany Solutions, a digital agency in Leeds, has taken control of a rope-making factory located in The Calls. The Calls rope-making factory is famous for making the ropes that led Sir Edmund Hillary up the side of Mt. Everest in 1953.

Epiphany Solutions decided to make the move after it outgrew its old office space as they have rapidly expanded with a staff increase of about 180% over the last year.

The digital marketing agency refurbished the rope making factory and is planning on creating an additional 15 jobs within the next year.

Chief Executive officer of Epiphany, Shane Quigley, said the business was started four years ago and has now expanded to include a team of 30 digital specialists that work with both international and national clients.

Quigley went on to state that since they have outgrown their shared offices in London the company went in search of a large building that would comfortably allow the team to double once again in size. He stated that the new location in the old factory has been refurbished and now includes hi-tech office space that will aid the company in its future expansion.

Furthermore, according to Quigley, the company is experiencing a large amount of growth in the search and digital sectors which has allowed them to take on a much larger slice business then their competitors.
